It's not mandatory but we strongly recommend it — especially for a trip with mountain driving, kayaking, and remote areas where medical evacuation could be costly if something goes wrong. A basic international policy covering adventure activities runs about ₹1,500-2,500 for the week. We can point you to a suitable policy when you confirm your spot.

Included: all accommodation, the Hanoi street-food walk, private-car transport through the loop, entry to the H'Mong King's Palace, the Nho Que boat trip, Lan Ha Bay kayaking, and your cabin on the overnight cruise. Excluded: international flights to/from Hanoi, e-visa fee (~₹2,219), travel insurance, tips (~₹250/day/person), and all drinks, personal spending, and souvenirs.

Hanoi has strong WiFi and 4G everywhere. In Ha Giang's mountains (Dong Van, Meo Vac, the passes), signal gets patchy — expect spotty 3G/4G and slower connections. We'd recommend grabbing a local SIM (Viettel has the best rural coverage, about ₹300-500 for a tourist SIM with data) on arrival in Hanoi. On the Lan Ha Bay cruise, WiFi is limited to none — good excuse to disconnect.

Yes, all the on-ground transport for this itinerary is arranged — private cars for the Hanoi-to-Ha Giang drive and the loop through Dong Van and Meo Vac, a boat for the Nho Que river, kayaks in Lan Ha Bay, and your cruise for the overnight stay. You won't need to book or navigate any local transport yourself during the trip.

Vietnam is generally very safe for travelers, and the Ha Giang Loop roads, while winding, are handled by experienced private drivers — you won't be self-driving. Your ExCo trip lead will share a local emergency contact card at trip start (guide, driver, and a 24/7 ExCo support number) and everyone will be in a group chat throughout for real-time coordination.

Layers (fleece + windbreaker), sturdy closed shoes for uneven terrain and the karst plateau, a light rain jacket (mountain weather is unpredictable), sunglasses, a power bank, any personal medication, and a small day bag for the boat trip and kayaking. Also pack a swimsuit for Lan Ha Bay and quick-dry clothes since you'll get splashed kayaking.

Alcohol isn't included in the edition price — that's on you. Vietnam has cheap local beer (Bia Hoi is around ₹30-50 a glass) and it's widely available in Hanoi and along the loop. Ha Giang homestays sometimes serve rice wine as part of local hospitality — totally optional to join in. Budget ₹2,000-4,000 for the week if you like a few drinks each evening.

Yes, easily. Vietnam has great vegetarian options — tofu, morning glory, fresh spring rolls, and plenty of rice/noodle dishes made without meat. Vegan is doable too, just double check for fish sauce (nuoc mam) which sneaks into a lot of dishes — our guides will help you communicate this to vendors and restaurants throughout, including on the street-food walk in Hanoi's Old Quarter.

Late Feb in Ha Giang's mountains is cool and can be foggy — expect 10-18°C, sometimes colder at higher passes like Ma Pi Leng, with morning mist that's beautiful but chilly. Hanoi is milder, around 15-22°C. Halong/Lan Ha Bay can be breezy over water. Pack layers — a fleece, a windproof jacket, and something warm for early mornings.

This trip is rated 4/5 on activity level — it's adventurous but not extreme. You're mostly in a private car (not driving yourself, so no motorbike skills needed), but there's walking on uneven mountain terrain, some steps at the H'Mong King's Palace, and kayaking in Lan Ha Bay. If you can walk briskly for 30-45 minutes and aren't afraid of winding mountain roads, you're good.
